Chapter Four
Parker took a long pull of his beer. Now this was the life—sitting in the cool evening breeze, listening to Chase play his guitar as the others challenged each other to a yard game. The clank of horseshoes punctuated his friends’ laughter.
Jesse threw the metal shoe while his lover took his photograph. Zach was a photographer and seemed to document everything they did. The flash of a camera was becoming a constant in their lives.
Leo and his mate Jackson had wandered off into the darkening landscape hand in hand. He could well imagine what those two were up to. Actually, he didn’t have to imagine. He could hear what they were up to if he listened hard enough. Parker chose not to listen, though, as he was much more interested in the sounds Thomas made while barbequing on the propane grill a few feet away.
“You know,” Ben said, taking a seat on the ground next to Parker. Ben’s two mates, Nick and Justin, sat by themselves, whispering about the kinds of things lovers talked about. “I kind of feel bad for Chase over there. He’s the only one without a mate.”
“Prefer it that way,” Chase called, not bothering to look at the two lycans.
“He says that now, but when those miles get long, and he is alone on his bike, and none of us are willing to fuck him, he’ll change his tune,” Ben insisted. Though he didn’t speak very loudly, the other wolves could hear him just fine. They could hear a whisper from fifty paces on a good day.
“Would rather get my dick wet with a woman,” Chase said from across the distance, not losing a beat.
“Don’t you mean you like playing the woman,” Parker corrected with a chuckle.
Thomas appeared, smelling like the grilling meat from the barbeque. He handed Parker another beer. “Food’s about ready.”
“Are you sure you want Parker?” Chase asked. “Beer. Open country. Steak. Hell, sweetheart, I’ll marry you for that alone.”
“Back off,” Parker warned, feeling suddenly possessive.
“Sorry, not much for bed-hopping,” Thomas answered.
“Chase, you make us sound like gold diggers,” Nick scolded, looking up from where he talked closely with Justin.
Thomas gave Parker a questioning look.
“Don’t worry,” Chase said. “We’re nothing but a bunch of rebelling trust funders. We’re what happens when the government doesn’t make you work or pay taxes.”
“The government kind of owes us. It’s a perk we receive due to some experiments done during World War I.” Parker stroked the outside of Thomas’s thigh. “It works out. The government keeps our kind secret and we don’t tell the world what they tried to do to us.”
“Meat should be done. Everyone come help yourselves,” Thomas said, turning to go back to his grill. The men didn’t need to be told twice as they rushed to be the first in line.
